The spirituality of Mallorca

The sanctuary of Santa Maria de Lluc (sanctuary of Santa Maria de Lluc, in Catalan) and the place name come from the Latin Lucus, and refers to “sacred forest”. It is located in the municipality of Escorca, approximately at 400 meters altitude, in the Sierra de Tramuntana on the island of Mallorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands. It is considered the holy place and pilgrimage site of the island, where the Virgin of Luke, the patron saint of Mallorca resides. Every year there is a multifaceted event called Marxa donis Güell a Lluch, on foot to Lluch, which is attended by more than 50,000 people who make a pilgrimage of more than 48 km from Palma until they reach the monastery. In addition, it has a botanical garden, which was restored in 1956, called Botanical Garden of Lluc. The monastery is the first and most important Marian sanctuary of the Balearic Islands.
